The offense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL over the last couple of weeks as they’ve managed to score 144 points over their last four games–three of which they’ve won. After a 1-3 start, the Buccaneers all of a sudden appear to have what it takes to compete for a Wild Card spot in the NFC and one of the main reasons why–the emergence of rookie running back Doug Martin.
During Sunday’s 42-32 win against the Oakland Raiders, Martin was impossible to contain in the second half as he finished the game with 251 yards and four touchdowns. What’s even more impressive–Martin has recorded 486 yards from the line of scrimmage and six touchdowns over the last two games.
Nobody could have predicted Martin to have this much of an impact on the Buccaneers’ offense this early in his career considering he was expected to share carries and play behind LeGarrette Blount, but that’s obviously no longer the case. All of a sudden, Martin is turning into one of the biggest steals from this year’s draft class and even from a fantasy football perspective since most owners selected him in the mid-to-late rounds.
If Martin can continue to play at this high level in the second half of the season, there’s no reason why Tampa Bay shouldn’t be able to at least contend for a Wild Card spot. And for all of the fantasy football owners lucky enough to have him on their roster–don’t be surprised if he plays a key factor in helping them win their leagues.
