There have been plenty of exciting story lines throughout the 2012 season in college football as the race to be named the Heisman Trophy winner seems to take a different turn each week. At this point, it’s clear the award will most likely go to either Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel or Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Matni Te’o, but which player is more deserving of taking home the honors for the 2012 season?
What Manziel has accomplished in his first year for the Aggies has been nothing short of amazing after he broke Cam Newton’s SEC record for most total yards with 4,600 yards while helping Texas A&M post a 10-2 record (6-2 in conference play). Manziel is coming off a strong performance against the Missouri Tigers in which he completed 32 of 44 passes for 372 yards with three touchdowns to go along with 67 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
If he does end up winning the award, Manziel would become the first freshman ever to do so.
However, despite everything Manziel has accomplished so far in 2012, it’s difficult to ignore what Te’o has done for the Fighting Irish. For a team that nobody really gave a shot at the beginning of the season to win more than six games due to a difficult schedule, Te’o has helped this team overcome all odds this year for a chance at the National Title. Not only is Notre Dame allowing just 10.3 points per game, but Te’o has managed to record six interceptions and six games with double-digit tackles on his own–which is impressive for any linebacker.
