St. Bonaventure Wins After Cold Night With No Electricity
Although they’re not the budding Cinderella team they were a year ago, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies are still an inspiring story in college basketball. Most folks wouldn’t have pinned Rhode Island to be a very tough opponent for St. Bonaventure and although the actual home team really wasn’t, the elements the Bonnies had to overcome the night before their Atlantic 10 game were more than enough for a front-page story.
In case you didn’t know, it’s pretty chilly in Rhode Island these days, so the fact the Bonnies’ hotel was without power the night before the game would have been enough for most teams at any level of basketball to throw in the towel and head home early. Not these Bonnies; they took very short showers with icy water, ate cold cuts and bread for breakfast, shoveled snow for two hours so they could crank their team bus and then had to reroute their morning shoot around because of the weather. St. Bonaventure was originally supposed to shoot at a local high school gym that morning, but ended up doing a walkthrough in the hotel ballroom that as cold as their rooms.
Needless to say, the Bonnies needed a few extra minutes of warmup time (emphasis on warm) before knocking off Rhode Island and heading home to take hot showers and eat hot food. St. Bonaventure is only 11-11 following the win, but this story should be enough to at least get them mentioned once the NCAA tournament selection committee gets together.
