Oscar Pistorius Arrested for Murder of South African Model Girlfriend
The man who was on top of the world just six months ago is now enduring the worst day of his life, and that’s saying something. South African Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius became the first Paralympian to compete in the able-bodied Olympics during the 2012 London Games when he competed in the men’s 400-meter dash. Now he’s being charged with the murder of his South African model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Early on Valentine’s Day morning, Steenkamp was allegedly sneaking into Pistorius’ house in Pretoria to surprise him. Reports say Pistorius mistook his girlfriend as an intruder and shot her in the dark, killing her.
Pistorius is now in custody of the South African police and awaiting his first court appearance on Friday. He was nicknamed the “Blade Runner” because he runs with carbon fiber blades as his prosthetic legs. Although he didn’t win a medal in the able-bodied Olympics, Pistorius is an example to anyone who has been though what he has–having both legs amputated below the knee as a toddler. Such operations are done due to many causes, but Pistorius’ was a bone defect. He hasn’t let that stopped him from accomplishing his dreams to this point, which included winning Paralympic gold medals and simply competing in the able-bodied Olympics.
The thoughts and prayers of the Rant Sports family go out to Steenkamp’s family and Pistorius as this Valentine’s Day certainly hasn’t turned out the way anyone planned.
