After falling just short of winning Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens, expectations will be even higher for the San Francisco 49ers heading into the 2013 season and even though they should be one of the top contenders in the NFC once again–they could always use some extra help on defense to make them that much more dangerous. The team already committed to sending Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs and now it appears they may be looking into completing another trade for one of the top cornerbacks in the league–Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets.
The Jets were apparently shopping Revis at the NFL Combine and while just about any team would be lucky to have him on board for the 2013 season, the 49ers need to be careful with how quickly they would jump on this deal if it were to happen. Keep in mind that Revis missed most of the 2012 season after suffering a torn ACL and the last thing San Francisco wants to see happen is they acquire a player who doesn’t return to 100 percent following a serious injury.
In other words–the 49ers should wait it out and make sure Revis is back at full strength before jumping the gun to acquire him from the Jets. There’s no question San Francisco would be one of the top teams in the league with a healthy Revis on their roster–so it should be interesting to see if there are any talks between the two sides over the next couple of weeks–especially since New York has made it clear they don’t want to throw all that money Revis’ way from his contract.
