Not many people may have predicted a Michigan – Syracuse Final Four battle, but believe it or not these two teams were actually each ranked within the top ten to begin the season. The Wolverines represent the last hurrah for the Big Ten Conference this season, while the Orange are one of two teams still pushing for a national championship out of the Big East.
Michigan advanced to Atlanta by way of the South Region, coming from behind to beat Kansas in the Sweet 16 on Friday before absolutely dismantling Florida on Sunday afternoon. Trey Burke continues to prove why he is a national player of the year candidate, but it has been the role players, most notably Mitch McGary, that have supplied the Wolverines with the firepower to make this incredible run.
Michigan will have their work cut off for them in this contest though because Syracuse has boasted the tournament’s top defensive squad thus far. The Orange and their infamous 2-3 zone have allowed the fewest points through the Elite 8 in NCAA Tournament history.
The good news however, is that if Michigan shoots the ball like they did against Florida on Sunday then they will surely have a good chance to advance to the National Championship game. If not however, Syracuse could move forward in their first Final Four appearance since 2003.
It’s a heavyweight battle in Atlanta and the right to play for all the marbles in college basketball is on the table.
