On Sunday afternoon, the Louisville Cardinals advanced to their second consecutive Final Four with a second half run that spurned victory over Duke. The Cardinals however, were playing inspired and for obvious reasons.
Late in the first half, Louisville sophomore guard Kevin Ware closed out and contested a three point attempt by Duke’s Tyler Thornton. Ware landed awkwardly on the sideline, virtually snapping his leg in half. The gruesome injury and obvious reaction after what had happened were simply shocking. The Cardinals players were drawn to the floor upon seeing Ware’s injury and even head coach Rick Pitino was seen wiping away tears.
Ware was taken off the court on a stretcher and transported to a local Indianapolis hospital. He underwent two hours of surgery, had his bone re-set and a rod insert into his right leg. Reports indicate that Ware will recover just fine. He is expected to remain in an Indianapolis hospital until Tuesday night when he can be released. Louisville is hoping to get him to Atlanta for their Final Four contest against No. 9 Wichita State.
Louisville played inspired in their victory over Duke on Sunday evening and with Ware obviously done for the remainder of the tournament, you know that they will be keeping him in their thoughts and prayers throughout.
An iconic photo emerged late on Sunday night following Ware’s surgery as he is seen in his hospital bed with the Midwest regional trophy simply resting on his chest.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kevin Ware and a speedy recovery.
