2013 Masters Video: Par 3 Contest Impact on Tournament
You probably weren’t betting on Ted Potter Jr. to win the Masters this year, but it’s all but official he won’t take home the green jacket after he “won” the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday. No golfer has ever clinched the Par 3 Contest title and went on to win the Masters Tournament over the following weekend and Potter isn’t exactly a favorite this year anyway. Potter won the light-hearted competition on the second playoff hole, topping Matt Kuchar with a birdie on the ninth hole after Phil Mickelson got bounced a hole earlier, but that will probably be all the winning he does during Masters week.
However, Mickelson’s performance in the exhibition might forecast a big tournament for him. He didn’t win the Par 3 Contest, so he’s not automatically out of the running for the green jacket due to golf superstition and his strong showing suggests he’s tuned up and ready to go. That could mean trouble for the favorites, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who both spent most of the Par 3 Contest smiling and enjoying themselves, which is what the exhibition is for. So with the real competition getting under way Thursday, who’s your pick to win the Masters this year? Comment below and let us know or tweet us using the hashtag #RML.
