It was a historically great round for the entire field at the Players Championship on Thursday, which means Tiger Woods had to buckle down and compete at a course that hasn’t treated him well in years prior. 2013 has been a rebound year for Tiger and heading into Ponte Vedra, the expectations seemed to climb higher than the temperatures.
Woods finished up the first round shooting a wonderful six under par–which happens to be the best score at TPC Sawgrass that Woods has ever tallied. It’s a different animal when so many other golfers are pouring in superb performances, but Roberto Castro will have to show that despite his inexperience, he can still hang tough with a great like Tiger.
Surely, the extracurricular activities between Tiger and girlfriend Lindsey Vonn have helped the best golfer on the planet re-gain his once enormous mojo. Vonn is one of the biggest Woods supporters out there and even she will have no control over what the magical TPC Sawgrass course has in store for Tiger moving forward. Healing his public image, Woods was spotted at Met Gala earlier this week where he and Vonn appeared to be one of the happiest couples in sports relationships history and on the red carpet in general.
Castro holds the cards in this tourney, but keep in mind that Rory McIlroy is also nipping on the lead’s heels after shooting a 66 on Thursday. You know that Tiger and Rory love to compete, so I definitely expect these two combating one another all weekend long. Woods is still the favorite to win the whole thing and Tiger doesn’t like to disappoint his fans–well, at least not on purpose.
