A story that began with a tacky billboard has ended with the Los Angeles Lakers having egg on their face. Dwight Howard will be a full-blown unrestricted free agent as of July 1st and LA is being dramatic as usual in its attempts to keep him in town. I don’t understand the infatuation with Howard, but I guess the Lakers’ faithful are hellbent on returning to the 2013-14 playoffs as a seventh seed once again.
Going by the numbers, Howard is a seven-time All-Star and the most dominant big man in the game. However, the massive headache that No. 12 brings to the locker room far outweighs his production on the court.
Of course, Los Angeles is a town built on superstars and it is also one that would much much rather lose with stars than win with not-so-sexy NBA players. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the embarrassing billboard that the team erected on Wednesday. What joke of an organization puts out an advertisement just to get shut down the following morning? Yes — the “DH12 to LA” campaign was put to a halt on Thursday when reports leaked that Howard is unlikely to wear the purple and gold this fall.
What a mess.
The Lakers are the only franchise in professional sports that’s idiotic enough to pull a stunt like this. Did they not see what happened to the multiple teams that begged and pleaded for LeBron James to come to their town in 2010? Players don’t care about how bad you want them — Howard cares about money, money and more money. Championships, tradition and class all are foreign to Howard, so the Lakers should be embarrassed for putting on such an annoying charade.
