Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars Both Benefit From Tyler Seguin Trade

It’s the nature of the beast: there simply isn’t enough money for star-studded NHL teams like the Boston Bruins to keep all of their talented players. So, in an attempt to save some cash, the Bruins have decided to trade Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars.

Aside from a less-than-impressive 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs Boston appeared to be building around the 21-year-old forward considering the six-year extension he signed with the club in September of 2012. However, Seguin will more than likely be playing out the rest of that contract in the “Lone Star State.” Some think that the Bruins got a steal as Boston received Loui ErikssonJoe Morrow, Reilly Smith, and Matt Fraser in exchange for Rich Peverley, Ryan Button and Seguin.

Dallas had to be hesitant about giving away Eriksson given the fact that the left winger has been a model of consistency during his seven-year stint with the Stars. Prior to the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign, Eriksson had at least 70 points in three straight seasons. By comparison, Seguin has only 121 points in his three-year career and has never had a season with 70 or more points. Of course, the thinking around Dallas is that Eriksson has hit his peak while Seguin still the potential to be an NHL All-Star for years to come.

Look for the Bruins to now focus their efforts on giving Tuukka Rask and Patrice Bergeron hefty extensions — Rask is an unrestricted free agent this summer and Bergeron only has one year left on his deal.
