NHL Free Agency Frenzy: Winners and Losers on Open Market

Thus far, the 2013 NHL offseason has been all about the Boston Bruins‘ inability to keep their 2013 squad that wound up in the Stanley Cup Finals intact. For example, Tyler Seguin, Nathan HortonAndrew Ference and Rich Peverely will all be playing somewhere other than Boston this fall.

With that being said, the Bruins were able to snag savvy veteran Jarome Iginla, who the team had targeted earlier this year. The Pittsburgh Penguins have to be excited about their offseason considering they brought back defenseman Rob Scuderi, who spent 2003-09 in Pittsburgh, but left for the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 2009. Hopefully, Scuderi can bring back some of the magic that LA had in its 2012 Stanley-Cup-winning season to the Penguins.

While Scuderi may be a bit over the hill, Jack Skille is only 26 years old and looks to be a driving force for the revamped Columbus Blue Jackets this upcoming season. After scoring 19 goals in the 2010-11 season, Skille has since cooled off and is hoping to garner some big-league experience in Columbus. The Blue Jackets were busy this weekend as they also snagged forward Nathan Horton, who was a big reason why the Bruins were crowned Eastern Conference champions this season.

A seven-year deal for Horton is rather lengthy considering the 28-year-old has suffered from a rash of injuries in the past — Horton won’t make his Jackets debut until December due to an offseason shoulder surgery. Time will tell if any of these high-impact signings prove to be a step in the right direction or if they will be seen as massive wastes of time and money later on down the road.
