Man, have the first two rounds of the 2013 PGA Championship been great or what? We’ve got new names at the top of the leaderboard and the heavy favorites at the beginning of the tournament are now nowhere in site. The cuts have been made, the round three groups are set, so guys like Jason Dufner and Jim Furyk are hanging on to their spots near the top of the leaderboard for dear life while Adam Scott has fire in his eyes and a second major of the season in his sights.
Dufner was the story on Friday after shooting a course-record 63 at Oak Hill to take a two-stroke lead over Scott, Furyk and Matt Kuchar at nine under par. Other notables in striking distance are Justin Rose at six under, Webb Simpson at four under, Sergio Garcia at three under, Jason Day and Rickie Folwer at two under and Lee Westwood at one under. After that, it gets crowded.
Rory McIlroy still has a slim shot at even par while Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are both 10 shots back of the lead at one over par. Neither player broke par in either of the first two rounds, so it’s looking like we’ll have a surprise winner or a statement made by Scott, who is looking to cement himself as World top-three golfer. If he keeps shooting under par, he’ll have a Wanamaker Trophy to pair with that green jacket he won earlier this year.
