Team: Clemson Tigers
Rant Sports College Football Rank: No. 8
Strength: Tajh Boyd is the face of the Clemson football program and the Tigers’ season rests firmly on his shoulders. A dazzling 2012 campaign ended with the then-junior quarterback tossing a career-high 36 touchdowns. In addition to quarterback play, the Tigers also excel at producing offensive weapons like Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins on the outside.
Weakness: For the second straight season, the Clemson secondary will be a less-than stellar group. To be fair, the fast-paced offense of the Tigers forces their defense to be on its heels more often than not. However, it’s not going to take much for the Tigers’ defense to get exploited this season. Clemson’s will be tested right off of the bat as the Georgia Bulldogs trek to Death Valley week one — Aaron Murray could have a field day versus this depleted secondary.
Player with most to prove: The aforementioned Watkins is entering a “contract year” if you will as a top-notch NFL salary is just calling Watkins’ name. With Hopkins now in the professional ranks, Tigers fans are just waiting for Watkins to do what he did in 2011 when the then-freshman wide receiver finished the season with over 1,200 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns.
Projected 2013 regular season record: 11-1
