Serena Williams Cruising at U.S. Open, Showing Why She’s No. 1

When she’s on, Serena Williams is the best in the business and she showed why in her epic first-round U.S. Open victory over Francesca Schiavone. Midway through the defending champ’s 6-0, 6-1 victory, her opponent embraced a ball boy because she just needed a hug.

That pretty much sums up Serena’s dominance thus far at the U.S. Open where she’s poised to defend her crown. It only took her one hour to top Schiavone and advance to the second round, where she joins her sister, Venus Williams, in the group of players still vying for this year’s crown.

Serena is looking for her fifth U.S. Open win and her 17th career Grand Slam title, but her mark just this season is staggering: 61-4. That’s the stuff of champions and it’s easy to see why the world’s best is still the most popular name in women’s tennis.
