The Washington Nationals disappointed in 2013 as the highly-revered Nats were unable to make the postseason despite many MLB pundits predicting Washington to reach the World Series this fall. Moreover, the Nationals started the off-season on the right foot as they have reportedly hired Matt Williams to serve as the franchise’s manager.
Williams was made famous during his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks for being an extremely fiery third-base coach, as he was very active in the D-Backs’ brawl with the Los Angeles Dodgers this summer. While it may sound barbaric, that kind of fire is exactly what the Nationals’ dugout has been lacking. For instance, youthful team leaders like Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper need a manager who isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers and Williams is just that.

However, it would be unfair to expect Williams to excel right off of the bat considering he has never managed at any level despite spending the last nine seasons in Arizona — first as a broadcaster and then as a coach. MLB prohibits teams from announcing moves like this during the World Series, so that’s why the “reportedly” label is still attached to this story.
