About 30 minutes before the Washington Capitals practice this morning, Nicklas Backstrom stepped on the ice and skated for about five minutes before leaving the ice. It was Backstrom’s first appearance at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in 17 days.

The 24-year-old Swede was wearing just his warmups on the ice for his brief skate that did not involve anything strenuous. Based on the length and intensity of his time on the ice it’s tough to gauge what his progress is at this stage.

Backstrom, who hasn’t skated since January 6, has been out indefinitely with a concussion, which he suffered when elbowed by then-Calgary forward Rene Bourque on January 3.

In the three days that followed the incident, Backstrom took part in two practices and felt confident that he wouldn’t even miss a game. However, it seems as though after his practice on January 6 Backstrom suffered quite the setback as his first time on the ice since then was today.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for the Swedish superstar with the possibility of Alex Ovechkin being out indefinitely for the hit he put on Zbynek Michalek during yesterday’s game against the Penguins.
