Okay boys and girls, it’s that time again.

On Wednesdays, I like to take a look at the “NFL Power Rankings” from all the big-time national sports media websites to see how and why they have the Redskins where they do.

This week, the guys over at Hogs Haven have a nice breakdown of eleven national rankings (including their own).

The average ranking for the Redskins is 14.81 (I guess we can call it 15) which is little higher than I was expecting.  Four websites had the kindest rankings (13):  FOX, SB Nation, CBS, and Hogs Haven.  Yahoo! had the lowest ranking for the ‘Skins at 18, and ESPN wasn’t much nicer with 16.

One ranking that Hogs Haven didn’t include is the one created by my good buddy Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk.  I’ve made my feelings about Florio and his NFL coverage pretty clear.  No one should ever mistake him for a Redskins fan.

Like Yahoo!, Florio has the 2-1 Redskins as the 18th ranked team in the NFL.  They’re the third lowest ranked 2-1 team and are behind two 1-2 teams (Falcons and Bears).  It could be a lot worse, I guess.

What’s more troubling to me than his ranking of the Redskins, though, is the little comment he provides:  “John Beck?  Keep your helmet handy.”

Really?  I mean come on.  Really?!  After three weeks and two wins, Rex Grossman’s seat is already hot?

Florio, like most of the national sports media, simply will not forget Grossman’s failures in Chicago four years ago.  This, even though he’s got five touchdowns to three interceptions so far this year.  Sure he’s got two lost fumbles, but the offensive line isn’t exactly stellar either.

So far in 2011, Grossman is 16th in the NFL in QB Rating, 10th in Touchdowns, and 12th in Yards.  That doesn’t sound, to me, like someone whose job should be in jeopardy, especially in favor of an unknown quantity like Beck who hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2007.

What the Redskins clearly need is a convincing win over the hapless 0-3 St. Louis Rams on Sunday.  If they can manage that, they’ll be 3-1 heading into their Bye week before facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 6.  Maybe then they’ll crack Florio’s top 15.

At least his Donovan McNabb-lead Minnesota Vikings have stumbled out of the gate to 0-3.  Little victories.
