It’s Time For Sam Huff To Ride Off Into The Sunset

Okay, now before I say anything, let me say this.  I’m a die hard Redskins fan.  I always have been.

And I used to really enjoy hearing Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen go back an forth during Redskins game calls.  They’re Hall of Famers.  I remember my dad telling me stories of Huff killing opposing quarterbacks and making plays.

But…

Have you guys listened to a Redskins gameday radio broadcast anytime over the last few years?

I know I’m not saying anything new here, but Sam Huff has to go.  I’m not sure if he would even notice he’s not in the booth on Sundays if they actually did tell him to stay home.

I was driving back from Richmond yesterday during the game, and I was able to catch the broadcast pretty much all the way home.  Larry Michael is what he is.  He’s a company man.

Sonny’s great though.  He’s still got plenty of good stuff to say that really adds to the experience.  He’s the best.

Huff, on the other hand, has no idea what’s going on.  Seriously.

There was one play yesterday when the ball was inside the Redskins ten yard line and the defense made a great play, and Sam praised the play, saying this Redskins defense was really playing hard.  Here’s the problem:  The Redskins were on offense.

I’m fairly confident that Huff didn’t even know who the Redskins were playing.  He kept referring to them as “the other team” and “those other guys” and “the opposing offense.”

I’m also convinced that he only really knows two names:  London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh.  It doesn’t matter what happens in the play, whether it’s a five yard loss or a big play by the opposing offense, all Sam wants to talk about is the middle linebacker position (the one he played).

He doesn’t know what’s going on.

Sonny and Larry are constantly, and I mean 15 or 20 times a game, having to correct Huff on something he says, whether it’s the down and distance, the score, the situation, etc.

I understand you want to always honor and respect the Redskins greats, but really guys.  Give him a nice ceremony and a gold watch, and let him watch the games from home from now on.

Pull Doc Walker up from the sidelines and stick him in Huff’s place.  The quality of your broadcast will improve ten-fold.
