When it comes to the Washington Redskins, success is not about the size of the players, or how many free agents can be picked up in the off season, as you probably have read in the media. Let’s not forget the 2012 Draft “if it happened right now” stories.

I, like you, already know what the problem is: They lack consistency.

The Redskins need improvement in several areas of their play. Here’s some statistical data from ESPN that I found most interesting:

  • In 2009, the Redskins were a low 60’s percentile passing team (63.8%). They were a little over 1500 yards in rushing, and made 86 third down conversions out of 216 attempts.
  • Fast forward to 2010: The Redskins were below 60 percent in passing (57.7%), dropped below 1500 yards in rushing (1461 to be exact) and made 61 third downs out of 208 attempts.
  • Now let’s look at last year: The Redskins were 58.5% in passing, rose above the 1600 mark in rushing, and made 81 out of 219 third down attempts.

Now, just for the sake of my argument, add the 16 interceptions in 2009, the 19 in 2010, and the whopping 24 picked up (or picked off…bad joke ..I know) this year to this conversation and you get my point.

This team is not consistent, and it starts with the three quarterback switches and two head coach changes within a five-year radius.  Who’s had time to settle down and adjust? No one.

I’ve kept a pair of Nike Air Max longer, and in better condition.

It’s amazing how people can point out different things with the team from how big the players are, whose soul they should sell for a good draft pick, and how many free agents it’s going to take to have a “successful season”. It won’t mean nothing if the team is not consistent enough to support those moves.

If you think the fans don’t see it, I’d suggest you take a real good look at what they’re doing too.

In 2009, fan attendance totaled 678,352 and in 2010, it totaled 665,380 (SOURCE: football.ballparks.com).  Now, I’m going to dare math in public, but I will not be naïve and ask how we lost 12, 972 fans.

I think we know the answer to that already. It’s all in the numbers. Washington needs to work on everything, and that begins with being consistent…on the positive side of the stats.
