Washington Redskins QB Search Top Storyline for 2012 NFL Draft
What I’m about to say about the Washington Redskins will have you shaking your head in agreement or spewing venom at the end of this blog post.
The Washington Redskins search for a quarterback has become the top storyline of the 2012 NFL Draft. There are only a few storylines that rival the hype and buzz surrounding the storied franchise:
- Who shot J.R. Ewing (Dallas: I have a link here for you “young folks”)
- Who shot Mr. Burns (Simpsons)
- The true reason as to why the Chicken and Peter Griffin hate each other (Family Guy)
- LeBron James, “The Decision”
Ok, so maybe I’m not being as serious as I should. Just run with it, because it’s true.

The Washington Redskins have made great strides in creating depth for a team that ended its season at 5-11. With an offense comprised of solid running backs and good receivers, and a defense that caught many by surprise this past season, the only thing left is a quarterback that can bring it all together.
Many blogs and news articles speak names like Peyton Manning, Kyle Orton, and Matt Flynn as possible candidates, but nothing will compare to the climax that will be created when the 2012 NFL Draft starts, and when the Redskins make their pick.
Let me make this clear: This takes nothing away from the veteran quarterbacks who, in their own way, have created storylines for themselves:
Peyton Manning: The rehab progress keeps the Colts QB future a mystery. Everyone from the front office to the lockeroom has tried to handle the pressures of waiting for a healthy Peyton to return to the field. Meanwhile fans want Andrew Luck. Even now, with Manning cleared to play, Colts fans have made that message clear with Luck Jerseys already produced, and worn. The latest news, according to the The Indianapolis Star is earlier this week Manning was working out at Duke University, based on a tweet from a Blue Devils player.
The player, Duke Center Matt Skura tweeted, “Got to stretch next to Peyton Manning today and say hello” (You can read the entire article here). Even more interesting, Indy Star reported the twitter account for Skura has been shut down.
And what about Kyle Orton? A player who was practically fed to the buzzards in Denver after fans began Tim Tebow chants. How does he fit into the Redskins’ storyline? He looked good with the Chiefs, but Matt Cassell is the starter.
Yahoo! Sports reports the Kansas City Chiefs have hired Brian Daboll as their new offensive coordinator and according to their team report , Daboll is more familiar with Matt Cassell, who is under contract. Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel was quick to point out that had no merit on the selection.
Green Bay’s Matt Flynn, for the most part, had the easiest of backup jobs in the league this past season. Aaron Rodgers had a star-studded year. For a guy that I’m sure wants to be more than the stand by, the Washington Redskins could look enticing.
These are all great storylines, which will make the Redskins’ pick even more interesting to watch.
What I think makes this year different is how well the Redskins look. The Redskins are not far off, no more than maybe two or three trades away from excellent depth (QB, a Tight End, a Wide Receiver). A promising season of wins and a possible playoff birth hasn’t looked this close since 2007, when they went 9-7. While that number still isn’t comforting, compared to the past three years, it would be welcomed.
When it’s all said and done, the Redskins pick will cause a major ripple in the world of free agency and draft picks of other teams. Why? Because in the NFC East, it’s about strategy and position. We beat the NY Giants twice and talked about it proudly. They will make sure that doesn’t happen again.
With that being said, clear your schedules. The first round begins Thursday, April 26 at 8 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds will follow Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET. Rounds four through seven will be held on Saturday, April 28 at noon ET.
