Gus Malzahn leaves as head coach at Central Florida to become the OC at FSU

After helping the University of Central Florida to get into the Big 12 Conference head coach Gus Malzahn is making a surprising move to join a rival one of the Knights rivals as the new offensive coordinator. Malzahn is resigning as head coach at UCF to become the new offensive coordinator at Florida State, as first Pete Thamel of ESPN. Malzahn will replace Alex Atkins, who was fired as the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator earlier this month.

He was on the hot seat, but did he beat UCF firing him?

Malzahn has completed his fourth season at UCF with a 28-24 record. After starting his tenure with two consecutive nine-win seasons, the team’s performance plateaued, culminating in a 4-8 record this season. He is set to become Florida State’s primary offensive playcaller, a position formerly occupied by head coach Mike Norvell. This shift occurs as the Seminoles conclude a highly disappointing 2-9 season.

Malzahn and Norvell have a history of collaboration, with Norvell’s inaugural coaching position being under Malzahn’s guidance at Tulsa in 2007.
