2016 Fantasy Baseball: 5 Third Base Busts

From a fantasy baseball standpoint, the third base position is stacked from top to bottom. There are plenty of established veterans, but youngsters like Kris Bryant, Miguel Sano, Maikel Franco and Joey Gallo are leading the next generation at the hot corner. However, there are still some mid-level options to try to avoid in the middle of the draft. So to help you pick out the best infield, here are five busts at the third base position.

5. Jung-Ho Lang, Pittsburgh Pirates

Kang was involved in a gruesome postseason collision, which seriously slowed his offseason progress. He will unfortunately open the season on the DL and will have to battle with free agent acquisition David Freese upon his return. It would be better to grab Kang as a reserve option this fantasy season.

4. Mike Moustakas, Kansas City Royals

Moustakas was once thought of as they next superstar at the hot corner. After 661 professional games, though, we know what we have in him. He has a mediocre .247 career batting average and the slugger has never eclipsed the 25-HR plateau. Moose is nothing more than a backup 3B in standard fantasy formats.

3. Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays

After recording 88 RBIs in 2013 and 91 in 2014, Longoria managed only 73 in 2015. Even worse, his 21 home runs were his lowest total since he hit just 17 back in 2012. Longoria has dropped in value across the board and the veteran is barely a starter anymore with the sudden depth at the position.

2. Adrian Beltre, Texas Rangers

Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz have received a good deal of attention in fantasy circles for their age this offseason, but Beltre will quietly being turning 37 years old this May. He likely only has one more respectable season left in his bat, and considering his current ADP, it would be wiser to go with one of the young sluggers out there with more upside.

1. Matt Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals

Carpenter has been a constant among the top-five third basemen this spring. He is coming off an impressive 28-HR/84-RBI season, but the infielder has only massed 25 home runs in the previous three seasons. His power will likely regress across the board in 2016, which will barely put him inside the top-10 of third basemen. Be careful not to pay for last year’s numbers.
