The Boston Celtics are heading into the season facing a tough rebuilding phase. They have traded away veteran stars such as Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in recent years, as well as valuable head coach Doc Rivers. They had a high draft pick this offseason and were able to take a young point guard in Marcus Smart, who has a lot of potential. As a younger team, they should look to add future assets and consider trading star point guard Rajon Rondo to another team.

Rondo is coming off an injury, but should be able to return as one of the better guards in the league. He is great on the ball, able to make extremely difficult passes to set up his teammates. He can get to the rim and has a variety of moves once he gets into the paint. On defense, Rondo has great hands and gets his fair share of steals on a daily basis. He is quick enough to deal with all point guards, and utilizes his length extremely well.

Many teams would be very interested in Rondo should the Celtics be looking to trade him. He has an expiring contract, but could be persuaded to stay in the right situation. More importantly, it would give the Celtics the opportunity to play Smart at the point guard position and let him develop. They can try to receive draft picks or young players in return for Rondo, to help them with the rebuilding process.

Trading away Rondo might be a hard decision, but the Celtics should strongly consider it. He is valuable enough to get quality assets in return, as it is unlikely that the Celtics will be able to compete for a postseason bid. They are better off letting their young players play, and seeing what they have for the future.
