Jameis Winston is showing he can be a darn good quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles. He’s showing he can be an All-American and also a Heisman Trophy candidate.
But more importantly for the Seminoles, Winston is also showing he has the tools to lead his team to NCAA football national championship contention.
It wouldn’t hurt for Winston’s teammates to chip in on that national title hunt, but Winston’s presence alone makes this a team virtually impossible, although not totally impossible, to beat.
Winston doesn’t only have to impress his opponents with how many yards he can pass for and how many points he can put on the board, he has to show them he can lead Florida State through some of its toughest challenges coming up, including Miami and Florida.
It’s not surprising he’s putting on a show at quarterback. All college scouts knew what he could do as the top high school quarterback prospect in the class of 2012. His redshirt process was smart on Florida State’s part. When he was 12-of-15 for 205 yards and two touchdowns at the spring game, it was obvious what he could do.
Teams with a dual-threat quarterback are destined to be championship contenders. That’s what makes the Seminoles a dangerous threat. Winston can pass very well in the pocket and on the move. Is there a throw Winston can’t make? It doesn’t look like it so far this season.
Winston has shown that when a play is not developing, he keeps his eyes down field for alternative plays. He’s that good.
Like any college quarterback, Winston is only human and he’ll have off games, which is where his teammates then need to step in.
But he’s not going to have many off games and perhaps none this season by the way he’s playing right now. Forget about Alabama. Winston is poised to take this team all the way.
