I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, “it’s never too early to start looking at ways to improve the roster.” As good as the Dallas Cowboys have been this season, there are holes that need to be filled. That is why today we’re taking an early look at five free agents that I’d like to see the Cowboys go after if they hit the free agent market.

Stephen Paea, DT, Chicago Bears

Coming off his best season as a pro, Stephen Paea, is slated to become a free agent after the 2014 NFL season. In 2014, Paea registered 33 tackles and six sacks, and was also credited with 11 QB hits and 31 QB hurries. Given that he has some history with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, Paea could be a great addition to a Cowboys defensive line that needs all the pass rushers it can get.

Mark Ingram, RB, New Orleans Saints

Another player coming off his best season as a pro is New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram. In 2014, Ingram gained a very quiet 964 yards on a very bad Saints team despite missing four weeks with injury. If for some reason DeMarco Murray departs via free agency, I think Ingram can come in and be a solid back.

Jason Pierre-Paul

It’s true that Jason Pierre-Paul isn’t the player that once might have been, but it doesn’t mean that he’s washed up or that he can no longer play the position, as evidenced by his 13 sacks in 2014. The Cowboys obviously have a need at defensive end, and might be able to solidify the position by adding Pierre-Paul to their rotation.

Greg Hardy, DE, Carolina Panthers

After being found guilty on charges of assault and communicating threats to a female, Greg Hardy was put on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission List. When the 2015 NFL Season begins, Hardy will be one year removed from setting the Panther’s single-season sack record with 15 sacks. Chances are that during the offseason, he can be had cheaply on a “prove it” deal. The only question will be, is he a “right kind of guy”?

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Detroit Lions

I think that Ndamukong Suh’s track record speaks for itself. I know it’s not the popular choice, but if the Cowboys are able to bring in a top-3 defensive tackle, and not only solidify the defensive line, but add some nastiness to it, why not?
