Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Redskins‘ Running back situation is foggy with no end in sight.

With running back  Tim Hightower finally getting some playing time against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, head coach Mike Shanahan was pleased, but still sounded  a little worried. However, Hightower got good reviews.

Hightower had five carries for 28 yards.

“I thought he did a great job,” Shanahan told reporters after the 30-17 victory. “I was glad he was able to get some playing time in there. He looked good. That one route that we missed the blitz on, he did a great job. He would have been wide open, and you could see him plant that knee.”

Hightower injured his knee during the Redskins’ game against the Carolina Panthers in October 2011.  Saturday was his big return.

“It’s been a process,” Hightower stated during a brief in-game interview.

And so is the Running back selection: A process.

With Evan Royster sitting out (knee) along with Roy Helu (Achilles) it seemed as if everyone switched roles.  I considered it just bad luck: finally Hightower gets a chance to play. We would be able to see all four men including Alfred Morris getting reps in one game.  That wouldn’t be the case, it was Morris’ show.

Playing time has been uneven:

While Shanahan goes through and tries to make sense of the past couple of weeks, the Redskins nation will have to just wait and see. The only real frontrunner here is Morris, but that’s by circumstance.  Everyone needs to get up to par and back on the field. Until then, I don’t think we’ll see a starting running back until Week 2 of the regular season.
