At 35-years-old, Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk was on the edge of retirement before signing a three-year contract to remain in Baltimore. With Birk tempted by retirement and not getting any younger, the Ravens would be wise to address their long-term need at center with their first-round pick. Pete Konz, a 6-foot-5 314-pound center out of the University of Wisconsin, is the best player available still left on the board and an ideal John Harbaugh type player.

Smart, tough, and talented.

General manager Ozzie Newsome and director of scouting Eric DeCosta have built the core of the roster through the draft and expect that trend to continue with the selection of Konz. A great two-way center who’s very technically sound and has incredible raw strength. He fits Baltimore’s offensive scheme perfectly and coming out of a Bret Bielema you already know he’s got a high football IQ.

While it might not be an exciting, or “sexy” pick, selecting Konz gives Baltimore several options this year as well as moving forward. If Matt Birk is able to start and continue to play at a high level then Konz can slide over to either guard position or remain a backup until needed. If Birk falters then Konz can step in right away and become the long-term center.

Either way Baltimore gets an impact player that gives them flexibility and stability moving forward. Baltimore could decided to go with a wide receiver like Alshon Jeffery but Konz is almost a sure lock to be the Ravens first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

With that said the Baltimore Ravens select C Peter Konz in the Rant Sports 2012 NFL Mock Draft

The Baltimore Ravens met with offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie a few weeks ago and came out of the meeting optimistic about McKinnie regarding his weight. However, McKinnie is in the same shape that he was in last season according to head coach John Harbaugh.

Team officials were hoping that McKinnie would have at least dropped a few pounds coming into the season being that he is listed at 360 pounds and came into Minnesota Vikings camp last season at a near 400 pounds. The only positive you can take from McKinnie is that he did not gain any weight. The Ravens are still trying to push McKinnie to get into better shape before the season starts.

McKinnie should not be surprised if he ends up losing his job. The team seems to be high on Ramon Harewood, who was injured all of last season. Harewood was drafted our of Morehead State in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft but since then has some major troubles with his knees.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun wrote that you should not be surprised if the Ravens to end up taking an offensive lineman in this year’s NFL draft to help out with the line that seems to be capsizing. The Ravens only have one other offensive tackle other than McKinnie or Harewood on the roster and that is Michael Oher. Marshal Yanda could also see time at tackle or guard this season.

Baltimore Ravens running back Ricky Williams has announced his retirement from the NFL via Twitter. The 34 year old Williams had one year remaining on his contract with Baltimore but has decided not to play next season. Williams rushed for 444 yards and two touchdowns in his lone season with the Ravens.

Williams famously posed in a wedding dress with Mike Ditka after being selected by the Saints in the first round of the 1999 draft. Williams’ best season came as a member of the Dolphins in 2003 when he ran for 1853 yards and 16 TDs. For his career Williams ran for 10,009 yards and 68 touchdowns.

The Ravens have several young running backs on the roster in Anthony Allen and Damien Berry who could take Williams’ place in the lineup.. Baltimore may also look to free agency in an attempt to find a suitable backup to Ray Rice.

The Baltimore Ravens have hired former Colts head coach Jim Caldwell as the team’s new quarterbacks coach. Caldwell will work closely with Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor. Baltimore is no doubt hoping that some of Caldwell’s magic from working with Peyton Manning for a decade will rub off on the pair of young signal callers. Caldwell served as Indy’s QB coach from 2002 through 2008. He was interviewed by Baltimore for the vacant head coaching position following the 2008 season, a job that ultimately went to John Harbaugh. Caldwell eventually replaced Tony Dungy as the Colts head coach. He was dismissed following a disastrous 2-14 season in 2011.

Ravens Coach John Harbaugh had his first press conference since his team’s crushing defeat in the AFC Championship Game. Harbaugh announced that linebackers coach Dean Pees would assume the role of defensive coordinator in place of Chuck Pagano, the newly minted head coach of the Colts. Pees joined the Ravens staff following the 2009 season. He served as defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2006-2009. Pees has big shoes to fill. The Baltimore defense has been one of the league’s most dominant units over the past 11 years.

John Harbaugh also ended speculation surrounding offensive coordinator Cam Camero who will be returning for his fifth season in Baltimore. Cameron has been the subject of fan unrest for years. The team is expected to add a quarterbacks coach to the offensive staff this off-season.

FOXBORO, MA – For all the talk of the high-flying New England Patriots offense and the hard-hitting Baltimore Ravens defense in the AFC Championship game, there may be one player who may be a factor in determining which team moves on to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice

Rice, the diminutive 5’8 fourth-year running back out of Rutgers, may be the best dual-threat running back in the NFL.

While other running backs such as Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew, Kansas City’s Jammal Charles, Philadelphia’s LeSean McCoy, Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch, Tennessee’s Chris Johnson and Houston’s Arian Foster can stake a legitimate claim, Rice’s versatility out of the backfield as a receiver and his durability makes him stand out.

It will Rice—not Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco—that holds the key to whether or not the Ravens will advance to their second-ever Super Bowl.

Flacco would help lead the Ravens to a 20-13 win over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round last Sunday, Rice would rush for 60 yards on 21 carries and catch four passes for 20 yards.

Rice would also have one fumble against Houston.

Rice draws a favorable match-up against the New England Patriots and their re-vitalized defense which went from being ranked 31st overall during the regular season to the best in the post-season as they have allowed 252.0 total yards per game—albeit the stats may be eschewed because it was against Tim Tebow—Baltimore is not Denver and Rice is not Tebow.

Rice has recent history to draw upon against New England as he would rush for 159 yards and score two touchdowns in leading Baltimore to a 33-14 upset of the Patriots in Foxboro during the 2009 AFC Wild Card opening round game.

Rice would open the game with a 83-yard touchdown run, and the help the Ravens score 24 straight points in stunning Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on their home field.

For Baltimore to win at Foxboro for a second time against the Patriots, they will have to establish Rice early on the ground, and use his versatility late in attacking New England’s suspect defense on the edge late.

Flacco may be under the harsh media spotlight to help lead Baltimore past New England, Rice may be the proverbial shadow who could steal the show.

BALTIMORE, MD – No Pittsburgh Steelers, no problem for Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens, right?

Not so fast.

With the AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens set to play the AFC South champion Houston Texans, both teams—despite their regular-season accomplishments may be nothing more than beneficiaries of luck and circumstance.

For the Ravens—their arch-rival and nemesis—injury-riddled Pittsburgh would be upset by the Denver Broncos 29-23, thanks to Tim Tebow’s 80-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime, do not have to face the prospect of losing to the Steelers for the fourth time in the post-season.

For the Texans, they would run away with the AFC South—thanks in part to Indianapolis Colts quarterback, Peyton Manning suffering a neck injury.

Not to take anything away from either Baltimore or Houston, but what if Pittsburgh didn’t lose to Denver? What if Manning didn’t injure his neck?

Would either even be in the playoffs facing each other?

If there is one person who may have benefitted the most that is involved in the up-coming Texans-Ravens clash is quarterback Joe Flacco.

Flacco, the fourth-year quarterback out of Delaware has finally been given the tools to not only slay the Steelers but ultimately lead the Ravens to their second Super Bowl title.

Flacco would throw for 3,610 yards, throw 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for a QB rating of 80.9

In an effort to help Flacco, Baltimore would draft speedy wide receiver Torrey Smith in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft and tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson in the third and fourth rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft respectfully.

Baltimore would also acquire Pro Bowl wideout Anquan Boldin from Arizona and Lee Evans from Buffalo and along with Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice, has a bevy of talent at the skill positions.

So is this the year that Flacco finally leads Baltimore to the Super Bowl?

If there was such a golden opportunity for the Ravens to go the Super bowl, this is it, due to playing at home in the Divisional round in Houston and their recent post-season success against the Patriots, Baltimore is the one team in the AFC that New England does not want to face due to their physicality.

While Flacco is a good quarterback, is he elite?

Does he have the mental toughness to be aggressive downfield in the post-season?

At 6’6 and 240 pounds, Flacco has the arm strength and physical makeup of an elite quarterback, but in terms of his mental make-up, he has shown a tendency to fold by throwing an ill-timed pass, taking a bad sack or simply making a bad decision.

Tomorrow’s game against Houston will be his first shot at staking his claim to elite status against one of the top defense in the league in Houston.

And if he succeeds, Flacco will face the top-seeded Patriots in Foxboro, and with all of the weapons at his disposal in Rice, Smith, Boldin, Evans and Dickson, Flacco and his apologists will have no more excuses if he comes up short again.

The play of Baltimore Ravens All Pro safety Ed Reed has suffered a noticeable decline over the past several weeks. According to comments made by Reed yesterday to ESPN.com the safety has been playing with a shoulder injury for several weeks. Reed’s seemingly half-hearted tackle attempt on the Bengals Bernard Scott lead to a touchdown run in the Ravens season finale. Reed admitted to ESPN.com that he has missed a tackle in each of the past four games. In addition to the reported shoulder injury Reed has played with a nerve impingement in his neck for several seasons, which has affected his tackling ability. Reed has always had a flair for the dramatic and his star has typically shined the brightest on the big stage. The veteran is likely nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career but he will have at least one more chance to impact a big game when the Texans travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in Sunday’s AFC Divisional Playoff game. The Texans rely heavily on runnings backs Arian Foster and Ben Tate to advance the football. Reed will have plenty of opportunity to be the hero or the goat for the Ravens on Sunday. Given his history I’ll put my money on Reed being the hero at least one more time.
