Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson refused to take a timeout after Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles in April because he thought the superstar was faking the injury. Jackson even told his players to not buy into what Kobe was trying to sell.
"Even in the midst of going against him I'm in huddle I'm saying, 'Don't fall for the okeydoke. He's all right. Don't allow him to take over this game,' not knowing that he was really hurt," Jackson said, according to the Examiner.
Slugger Ryan Braun trolled the media, his friends, his family and the fans when he constantly denied the use of performance-enhancing drugs. What’s even crazier is the amount of fans that trolled him after his suspension was handed down. Not to mention, the numerous people that trolled quarterback Aaron Rodgers for standing up for Braun.
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks trolled the heck out of quarterback Robert Griffin III in the media after the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Washington Redskins in late November.
"He's obviously a man and he makes his own decisions, but I personally don't feel he should be playing right now," Brooks said, according to CSN Washington.
I know this slideshow is all about specific instances of trolling in 2013, but let’s be honest, cornerback Richard Sherman trolls opponents and Twitter followers every chance he gets. If you want a classic example of him trolling then check out the video below of him getting in a fight with Redskins lineman Trent Williams after a Washington loss.
Prior to the start of The Barclays golf tournament, Tiger Woods was asked why he had a stiff neck and back, which made him withdraw from his previous tournament. Apparently, the reason was because of a soft hotel mattress. Of course, people took to Twitter to comment on Woods obviously trolling everyone.
“Tiger blamed his back and neck pain today on "soft hotel beds". I'm sure there are no jokes being made about any of this,” tweeted @TheBarclaysGolf.
Earlier this year, a New England Patriots fan ordered a Tom Brady Fathead. Unfortunately, Fathead decided to troll the heck out of him when they sent him a Fathead of Tim Tebow as a member of the New York Jets. Don’t worry the company made up for it by sending the fan all 13 Brady Fatheads they make.
Good thing Robinson Cano is a rich man because he can never show his face in the greatest city on Earth ever again. New York Yankees fans took to Twitter to berate Cano after he signed a massive contract with the Seattle Mariners. All of the trolling was in response to Cano thanking New York and the “amazing fans for the support.” Of course, that didn’t go over well for anyone in the Big Apple.
“$240M & u tweet thanks to NY & fans - REALLY? HERE'S AN IDEA - TAKE A FULL COLOR AD OUT IN THE NY POST U HILLBILLY! C'MON MAN,” tweeted @AngryChicagoan.
“do you want the autographed ball I have back You can sell it and keep the money since that's all you care about,” tweeted @picklethemickle.
San Francisco fans raised enough money to erect a billboard less than a mile away from CenturyLink Field in Seattle. The billboard will show Dwight Clark’s famous catch in the 1982 NFC Championship game, five Lombardi Trophies and the question, “How man do you have?” across the top. The epic trolling comes in response to Seahawks fans who paid for plane banner to be flown over Candlestick Park.
Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy tweeted, “83 Days Until Kickoff! Big time play in a #BCS classic. #BeACowboy.” Attached was a photo of No. 83 Colton Chelf making a big catch against the Oklahoma Sooners. Obviously, he lined up the No. 83 with 83 days until the start of the season as a way to taunt his rival. The Sooners did one better in response to Gundy’s tweet.
“83 days until #ItsFootballTimeinOklahoma! OU has defeated Oklahoma State 83 times, its most wins against any school.”
And that’s how we land an epic troll moment.
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier knows exactly how to tick off opposing players, coaches and fans. Nothing was different prior to the showdown against Tennessee Volunteers in October when Spurrier trolled the Volunteers in his Thursday press conference.
“Will be the 14th time I've coached in Neyland Stadium. ... I've coached there more than some of their head coaches,” tweeted @JoshatTheState.
“Steve Spurrier on UF's 8-yr win streak over UT: "It hasn't been quite as big a game. When's the last time Tennessee won? '04? Been a while,” tweeted PBPjasonlieser.
Calgary Flames president of hockey operations and general manager Brian Burke was having a bad hair day during a press conference. The best part was that his kids made sure he was aware of it via Twitter.
“Okay… so maybe I should pick Dad up for a haircut this week,” tweeted daughter Molly Burke.
“No I’m buying him a brush for Christmas don’t you ruin this,” responded son Patrick Burke.
“Maybe it’s for Locks of Love and HOW WILL YOU ALL FEEL THEN,” added Patrick in another tweet.
An Alabama storage company in Tuscaloosa decided to troll Texas Longhorn fans with a billboard after head coach Nick Saban signed an extension with the Alabama Crimson Tide. The billboard read, “We messed with Texas! Roll Tide!”
Auburn Tigers alumni and Apple CEO Tim Cook decided to troll the Crimson Tide during his Lifetime Achievement Award speech. Cook asked if he could have “one extra second” at the end of his speech, which was in reference to Alabama having just one second left in the Iron Bowl.
In early December, the Portland Trailblazers posted a 15-3 record. Feeling good about themselves, they decided to troll the entire Eastern Conference.
“Is it too late to join the Eastern Conference? Asking for a friend,” tweeted @trailblazers.
By far the most crazy and bizarre troll of the year belongs to Mike Florio. The writer over at Pro Football Talk engaged in a Twitter battle with Jacksonville Jaguars mascot Jaxson DeVille. Yes, a mascot.
The following is the legendary Twitter exchange between the two parties:
@ProFootballTalk: Jaguars announce stadium enhancements, including new video boards and removal of 7,000 seats
@JaxsonDeVille: YOU'RE AN IDIOT FLORIO! The field is 360 feet long #moron
@ProFootballTalk: And now we've got Chester Cheetah a/k/a Pete Puma a/k/a @JaxsonDeVille riled up. #awholelottalumps
@JaxsonDeVille: Props to @ProFootballTalk for Capitalizing on people's lack of desire to Google search the web themselves for articles about their team.
@ProFootballTalk: @JaxsonDeVille. . . Props to you for finding a mild upgrade from your gig as Eric the Clown.
@JaxsonDeVille: we're both seen as clowns but I can take my suit off!
@JaxsonDeVille: Mike @ProFootballTalk I Can keep busting U up all night but I got important things to do like cleaning my litter box now go copy and paste!
And that my friends is the most epic instance of trolling in sports in the year 2013.
