Even the most decorated Olympian in history still has personal issues that can bring him down. In the wake of a second DUI arrest, swimmer Michael Phelps has decided to attend a program that will allow him to better improve himself, which will be crucial if he wants to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“The past few days have been extremely difficult,” Phelps said on Twitter Sunday morning. “I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself.

“I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”

It is certainly a great possibility that Phelps bettering himself is nothing more than a publicity stunt. At the same time, I like to believe that he is sincere in getting his life together prior to making another run at Olympic greatness.

The reality is he has plenty of admirers and people who look up to him, which is why being charged with several traffic violations, including driving under the influence, is not ideal. By attending a program that will aid him in improving the way he conducts himself, it shows that he is truly trying to show people how to be a better person. That will become even more crucial considering he could face up to a year in prison if he is convicted of the crimes set upon him.
