Some might be shocked that the most decorated Olympian would take time away from the swimming pool to get his life in order, but Michael Phelps recently tweeted that he would attend a program after his recent personal problems. He is making the right decision and could be saving his life.

Could this decision cost him a few medals in the 2016 Olympics? Of course it could — there is no denying that. But it’s also worth mentioning that medals would not do him much good if he ended up in a casket. It should be interesting to see if he can get into a better headspace before the summer of 2016, although obviously his health is more important.

He vowed to “attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself,” and I applaud him for that.

The recent death of Rob Bironas and the release of Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater has cast some light on issues that many American athletes face when it comes to substance abuse, and here is hoping that all of these cases help other athletes and everyday people look inside themselves before it is too late. Phelps now seems to finally realize that life is a lot sweeter than gold medals.
