At the fourth one-day international (ODI) match held in Kolkata, Indian batsman Rohit Sharma hit 264, becoming the first cricketer to hit more than 250 in an ODI. Prior to this performance, Virender Sehwag's 219 against West Indies in 2011 was the top mark.

With India at 404-4, Sharma at just 27 years of age became the second player to hit two double centuries in ODIs. He had opened with a 173-ball knock.

"I'm not really tired. I was ready to bat another 50 overs," Sharma said following the match. "Once I got to 50, I knew I had to convert because it was a good batting wicket. We wanted to get a big score and that made me stay there as long as possible. Kolkata is a very special ground to me - I made my first-class debut and Test debut here. I also got an IPL hundred here, so it's very special."

Prior to 2010, no batsman had passed 200 runs in 2,961 previous ODIs. Sharma's performance is the fourth double hundred in four years. All have been by Indian batsmen playing in India, with Sachin Tendulkar becoming the first cricketer to reach 200 against South Africa in 2010. Sehwag topped that record just a year later.
