Week 19 Fantasy Baseball: Start SP Matt Cain This Week

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

One fantasy baseball starter that has pitched all over the place this season has been San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain. The perennial Cy Young Candidate currently has a miserable 4.57 ERA, which is a far cry from his career 3.39 ERA.  He also has a 7-6 record and a somewhat inflated 1.17 WHIP. Needless to say, Cain hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations this season.

Cain had a meltdown against the Los Angeles Dodgers during his first start in July, as he allowed eight earned runs through just 2.1 innings of work. He followed it up by getting shelled for three earned runs against the New York Mets and the right-hander didn’t even get out of the first inning after throwing 36 pitches.

However, Cain has pitched much better in his three starts since the All-Star break. He has only given up four earned runs over his last 20 innings of work and has a sizzling 1.80 ERA over that span. The hurler has also struck out 18 batters and Cain finally looks to be over his midseason slump.

Even more promising is that Cain will get a chance to pitch twice in the upcoming scoring period. Here is a look at his Week 19 starts as they appear right now.

Week 19 Starts:

8/6 vs. Milwaukee Brewers

8/11 vs. Baltimore Orioles

Cain is worth taking a shot on this week. He is finally coming around and the extra start is just enough incentive to give him the nod in weekly leagues. If you have Cain on your roster, I would take a shot on him in Week 19.
