Fantasy Football Week 1 Dud: DeSean Jackson

If the Washington Redskins‘ offense was playing opossum during the four-game preseason schedule, the season opener against the Houston Texans would have been a most opportune time to unleash the fireworks that most hoped to see from new head coach Jay Gruden.

Someone also should inform wide receiver DeSean Jackson that the 2014 season started last weekend; from the looks of things, he may not have received the memo. Forget about standing out — the former Philadelphia Eagles star was hardly noticeable against a subpar Texans secondary. For those fantasy GMs who opted to draft the receiver, they might want to entertain thoughts on making some roster changes ahead of  Week 2.

Washington’s WR corps averaged 17.4 fantasy points per game against Houston in 2013, which was good for the seventh-lowest in the league. Jackson was targeted nine times against the Texans, and finished with an ineffective eight-catch performance for 62 yards. The three-time Pro Bowler, and arguably the most publicized offseason acquisition that the Redskins made, finished the afternoon with just six fantasy points for his efforts.

He had no visits to the end zone, and his longest reception from slumping quarterback Robert Griffin III was good for a mere 17 yards. He was also recognized with one rush for -9 yards.

Fantasy owners would be well to make the necessary changes within their WR ranks. Until Gruden can get RGIII right, that Redskins offense is questionable as a whole, and I would advise starting Jackson until the man throwing to him at least shows some signs of life.
