Every season since being drafted in 2010, C.J. Spiller has shown flashes of brilliance. Then the veteran Fred Jackson stepped in and ended up outworking and outplaying him. Week 3 of the fantasy football season won’t be any different. If you own Spiller, you should sit him on your bench and spare yourself the frustration.

It’s a mystery why a player of Spiller’s speed and agility has not yet overtaken the bulk of the work in the Buffalo Bills‘ backfield. Because he has not been able to take his running game to the next level, the coaching staff is trying to find other ways to exploit his skill set. Returning kicks has been that outlet.

Take away Spiller’s return touchdown last week, and owners in a PPR format would have been left with less than 10 points. He had only 78 yards from scrimmage with a single reception. Spiller has yet to find the end zone via a rushing touchdown in 2014.

Last week Jackson out-touched Spiller 14 to 13. While Spiller had more production with his touches, Jackson was targeted four times compared to once for Spiller in the passing game. Jackson will probably be the go-to back on third downs versus the San Diego Chargers, as his pass protection exceeds that of Spiller’s.

The Chargers’ defense  is middle of the pack versus the run so far. However, they have a very efficient, capable offense. It may only take a few three-and-outs by Buffalo in this one before they find themselves playing catch up.

Anything is possible, but I see the Bills playing from behind in this one and having to air the ball out a lot in the second half. If that’s the case, owners will be better off starting Sammy Watkins again in Week 3, as it appears he and quarterback E.J. Manuel are developing a good rapport with one another.
