Fantasy Football Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickup: TE Andrew Quarless

If you were to watch the Green Bay Packers and find out who their starting tight end is, you’d be surprised. Richard Rodgers is listed as the Packers’ starting big man, but from the looks of it, Andrew Quarless would be the top tight end listed. In their Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions, Quarless saw 32 snaps against Rodgers’ 11. Furthermore, Quarless has recorded 11 targets to Rodgers’ zero.

Those 11 targets to Quarless have made him Aaron Rodgers‘ third-favorite target behind WRs Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. Between the two, they compose 56 percent of the Packers’ targets. So that limits Quarless’ value from an opportunity standpoint, but he at least has an advantage over the rest of the team.

Rodgers connected with Quarless in the first quarter of the matchup – the only Packers’ score last week. He also caught four of his five targets from Rodgers, which should increase his quarterback’s confidence in him. Quarless is a big, athletic target that Rodgers will likely start seeing more like he did Jermichael Finley in seasons past.

When Finley was healthy, he was a Top 10 option, churning out a fifth ranked tight end in 2011. In the past three seasons, Rodgers has targeted the tight end the third most among his targets (including Finley and Quarless as a single target due to Finely’s injury). In fact, he’s targeted his tight end at least 80 times in each of those seasons. Quarless is on pace for such a season thus far.

Barring injuries, Quarless could at least be a Top 15 tight end option.; he’s actually the 15th ranked tight end right now. Based on his emergence against the Lions, his stock could rise. I don’t expect the world of him, but if you are lacking depth at tight end or need to find a backup, he could at least hold you over for a week.
