Fantasy Football Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Miles Austin

Miles Austin

It’s always scary picking up a Cleveland Browns wide receiver not named Josh Gordon, but Miles Austin is worth a roster spot. He just finished his second straight double-digit fantasy performance, and it’s time to put some faith in him.

The Browns don’t have their usual quarterback woes. With Brian Hoyer under center, fantasy owners should be able to pick up Cleveland wideouts with more confidence. He’s reliable, he keeps getting better, and he’s building chemistry with Austin.

The former Dallas Cowboys player made six grabs for 51 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. In Week 2, he put up 44 yards on six catches with a touchdown. That production doesn’t sound overwhelming, but it’s solid and you can expect more of the same. The knock on Austin has never been a lack of talent; it’s always been the health issues.

There isn’t a lot of risk taking an injury-prone player off the waiver wire. If he gets hurt again, just drop him. We’re heading into Week 4, which means there is probably somebody on your bench you want to drop anyway.

It’s true that Hoyer has been targeting Andrew Hawkins more, but that could change. In the last two weeks, Hawkins has caught 13 of 23 targets while Austin has grabbed 12 of 16. There’s a good chance Hoyer is going to start to favor his more efficient receiver. He already seems to favor Austin in the red zone, as Hawkins has yet to make a touchdown catch this season.

Now is the time to get in line for Austin. If he has another double-digit performance, he’s going to be the hot waiver wire name. Snag him before that happens.
