Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR James Jones

Things have not gone well for the Oakland Raiders thus far this season. They are 0-4 heading into their bye week, and there aren’t many positives to take away from their play. Even in the world of fantasy football, the Raiders are a pretty barren wasteland. However, one player garnering a little attention is wide receiver James Jones.

Jones was a free agent acquisition for the Raiders this offseason, signing him away from the Green Bay Packers to be their No. 1 receiver. With Derek Carr winning the starting job under center at quarterback in the preseason, Jones was in line to see a spike in production. But with Carr suffering an injury against the Miami Dolphins in Week 4 in London, Jones will be stuck with lesser options in Matt McGloin or Matt Schaub.

In four games thus far, Jones has recorded 21 receptions for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Those are pretty strong numbers for a player with a rookie quarterback and not many other weapons to play alongside of.

With the Raiders’ poor play equaling plenty of deficits, Jones makes for an intriguing addition because of the frequency the Raiders will be throwing the ball. They will be trailing a majority of their games, especially with the weaker armed and less upside options the team currently has behind Carr.

With that said, if Jones is still on your waiver wire, you should leave him there for now. With the Raiders heading into their bye week with a murky quarterback situation, no one should be banging down the waiver claim doors for Jones. He should be safely left there for this week.

Even when the Raiders return from their bye to play against the San Diego Chargers Week 6, Jones should be ignored for the time being. Until the quarterback situation is cleared up, Jones’ upside is extremely limited and unknown. He has performed well with Carr under center, but his injury could knock him out for multiple weeks. As long as Jones is catching passes from McGloin or Schaub, he should remain on the waiver wire.
