Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Malcom Floyd Has Great Value

It’s a good time to be a wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers. Philip Rivers is having somewhat of a career renaissance after many experts had him written off following subpar 2011 and 2012 seasons. His touchdown to interception ratio is a fantastic 9-1 and he’s boasting a 70 percent completion rate after four games. He also consistently manages to spread the ball around to different receivers.

What does this mean for Malcom Floyd? It means if he’s foolishly sitting on the waivers, put a claim in for him immediately. Yes, Floyd is an aged veteran and he doesn’t seem to be programmed to have many plays specifically go his way — as evidenced by only seeing 15 targets over four games. Keenan Allan, Eddie Royal and Antonio Gates are Rivers’ more favorable options, but that doesn’t mean Floyd isn’t worth a look.

The Chargers are a pass first team, and their depleted group of running backs are only going to make them emphasize the pass that much more. Floyd’s 6-foot-5 frame is going to make him a, literally and figuratively, big option for Rivers at the goal line, especially going up against the weak defensive backfields of the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders.

If you’re able to make Floyd an addition to your fantasy team, he’s probably never going to be a regular No. 1 or 2 receiver in your starting rotation. However, with how well Rivers is playing and how often he throws the ball, having Floyd as an injury or bye week replacement will be of great value. Any Chargers receiver has big game potential. Floyd is no exception.
