Fantasy Football Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickup: RB Branden Oliver

The San Diego Chargers have seen almost every running back on their roster go down with an injury this year, and it has ruined the weeks of many fantasy football owners. Starter Ryan Mathews is currently nursing a knee injury and will still miss several more weeks, while Danny Woodhead has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a broken ankle and fibula.

In their absence, Donald Brown was quietly rounding into a low-end starter in deeper formats. He carried the ball 31 times in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills and ended up with 89 all-purpose yards on the day. Unfortunately, the injury bug once again bit the Chargers, as Brown left Sunday’s game with a concussion. Brown was unable to return to the lineup and the former UConn standout is highly questionable to start for the Chargers in Week 6 against a lowly Oakland Raiders defense.

The latest option to receive carries in San Diego has been University at Buffalo product, Branden Oliver.

In the team’s 31-0 thrashing of the New York Jets this weekend, Oliver was a critical part of the offense. He ripped off an absurd 114 yards on only 19 carries, including a 15-yard touchdown run. The rookie also caught four balls for 68 yards and a touchdown. It was a monster fantasy performance from the first-year back.

Oliver is absolutely worth picking up this week off the waiver wire in all formats. He has secured a short-term spot in this high-powered offense and the youngster could even end up starting in Week 6 if Brown is unable to go.
