Fantasy Football Week 6 Start or Sit: Matt Asiata

In Week 6, the Minnesota Vikings will be looking to rebound at home against the Detroit Lions; a team also coming off a loss in Week 5. In the Vikings’ loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, they were without rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was unable to play due to an ankle injury. Without Bridgewater, the Vikings’ offense looked pretty pathetic against the Packers’ defense, but good news for the Vikings this week is Bridgewater will be back.

The Lions’ defense has been great against the run all season, and that does not bode well for Vikings running back Matt Asiata and owners of him in fantasy football. While filling in for Adrian Peterson, Asiata has done very well in the expanded role, and has been added in most fantasy football leagues. This season, Asiata has 231 yards on 61 carries (3.7 yards per carry) and three rushing touchdowns. In the passing game, he is playing well with 12 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

One thing that will be affecting Asiata’s fantasy value is that Jerick McKinnon is starting to get some more work. In the past two weeks, McKinnon has gotten 25 carries, which is quite a bit for a backup RB. The last time Bridgewater played, McKinnon had more carries than Asiata with 18 against the Atlanta Falcons.

For fantasy owners of Asiata, starting him is an unwise thing to do against a very good Lions’ frontline that has been stout against the run.
