Fantasy Football Week 7 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Andre Holmes

WR Andre Holmes‘ status as a must-add waiver pickup this week is not completely based off his Week 6 performance. He should have been on GM’s radars after a Week 5 performance in which he scored 13 points. But his two touchdowns and 121 yards last week should push owners over the edge to pick up the Oakland Raiders‘ wide receiver.

Sure, these two weeks could be his only two productive weeks. But considering that he’s ranked as a top 20 WR in terms of Wins-Added, I’d say it’s likely the Raiders keep looking his way. He’s starting to become rookie QB Derek Carr‘s favorite target, evening the gap between him and James Jones. In the last two weeks, Holmes has compiled 20 targets compared to Jones’ 13. What Holmes has going for him is his big 6-foot-5 frame compared to Jones’ 6-foot-1 stature. That opens up more inaccurate passes from the inexperienced quarterback to aim at Holmes. Expect him to keep aiming toward him to keep their chemistry in tune — a tune that rang four touchdown passes for Carr last week.

However, prospective owners should also be happy with how often those targets are downfield. Holmes’ deep ball targets rank sixth among receivers this season. That makes for big-play production possible of double-digit strikes, but it also opens up more room for error. The concern is that some games he won’t be able to haul in any of those targets, his catch rate stands at just over 50 percent. So it’s a double-edged sword for Holmes. What kills him makes him stronger, and your team’s production for that matter, if you pick him up.

But he’s looking too good over these last two weeks to ignore him. Bye weeks are in full swing and you’re likely in need of a wide receiver. Choices are limited, so why no take a shot down field with Holmes? You may not always hit gold, but you’ll forget about the misses when he puts up 20-point performances.
