The St. Louis Rams are not having a good season thus far. They are down to starting their third-string QB and their defense is not living up to the hype. But there are some bright spots to be found with this team. One of those bright spots is rookie RB Tre Mason.
Mason was a monster in college, where he ran wild for the Auburn Tigers and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He was drafted this offseason by the Rams and was tabbed as the possible starter in the future. And becoming the starter in the backfield may be happening sooner than anyone has expected.
Last week, Mason saw his first game action this year and he did not disappoint. He touched the ball six times and was able to gather over 50 total yards in those limited touches. That is huge for a Rams team that needs a playmaker who can give them big chunks of yardage on a regular basis. That was supposed to be Tavon Austin or Zac Stacy, but neither player has really asserted themselves, opening the door for Mason to get touches. So although he is behind Stacy and Benjamin Cunningham on the depth chart, if he gains good yardage, he will get touches.
Mason will have a tough matchup this week, facing the Seattle Seahawks with one of the best defenses in football. But this could actually work in Mason’s favor. The Seahawks have a strong pass defense, so the Rams will want to try to establish the run first. That means at least a few touches for Mason. And with players like Bobby Wagner out and DeMarco Murray running for over 100 yards last week on the team, Mason could see success with those carries.
Mason is likely not going to be a weekly fantasy play until next season, but that does not mean he can’t help your team now. He is starting to get a look in the Rams’ backfield and is making the best of those touches. And since he will be facing a weakened Seahawks defense, Mason could be a nice sleeper in deep fantasy leagues for Week 7.
