Miami Dolphins tight end Charles Clay had a breakout game on Sunday against the Chicago Bears which has given rise to the hopes that he is finally returning to his former position of prominence in the newly efficient Dolphins offense. If he is available in your league, it is worth taking a look at him as a potential spot starter.

Throughout the early part of the season, Clay battled a knee injury that hindered his ability to move down the field, but he showed no signs of the injury’s effects against the Bears, catching four passes on five targets for 58 yards and a touchdown. Is this the sign that he is finally back to health and ready to play a serious role in the offense? Fantasy owners have reason to hope so.

Last year Clay tallied 69 receptions for a total of 759 yards and six touchdowns, and while this year’s numbers are behind pace, feel confident in attributing those deficiencies to his not being 100 percent and Ryan Tannehill’s adjustment time to a new offense. At 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds with 4.6-4.7 speed, Clay presents a matchup nightmare as a threat over the middle for many defensive coordinators. And with Tannehill settling in and using the intermediate, play action passing game more, expect Clay to get a lot more targets.

By no means is Clay an elite option like Jimmy Graham or Julius Thomas, but he can provide some significant value depending on the matchup. This week he goes up against a Jacksonville Jaguars team that is coming off a surprise thumping of the Cleveland Browns but has struggled to perform consistently. Expect similar, if not better, numbers against the Jags compared to what he put up against Chicago.
