In Sunday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, New York Giants wide receiver Preston Parker had his most impressive game to date. The no. 3 receiver was targeted seven times, hauling in each pass for 79 yards and one touchdown. With the absence of Victor Cruz, Eli Manning has had to spread the ball to some of his more lesser-known receivers. This week, Parker was one of them.
While he had a great performance against the Seahawks, it isn’t very likely that he puts up double-digit points every week going forward. He may even only do it once or twice for the remainder of the season. In deeper leagues, and especially if those are PPR leagues, he should be given some consideration. But in anything less, I would pass.
Before Sunday’s game, his previous high in targets this season was six, which came against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9. However, he only caught one of those passes for seven yards. In fact, he’s only hauled in at least three passes three times this season. If you watched the Giants game, you may have gotten the impression Parker was out for redemption. It certainly looked that way, but I don’t think he will have a very high value going forward.
In the next two weeks, the Giants will face the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys, and both teams rank in the lower half of the league in fantasy points surrendered to wide receivers. Given that he’s the third wide receiver on a struggling offense, it would be a big risk grabbing Parker off the waiver wire this week.
Manning has quickly grown fond of rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., and Ruben Randle leads the team in end zone targets. Neither lead one to believe Parker will become a mainstay in the Giants’ offense, especially if he drops a couple more passes. Head coach Tom Coughlin often doesn’t find it difficult to bench a struggling, unproven player.
In the pass-driven state of the NFL, there are likely better targets on this week’s waiver than Preston Parker.
