Fantasy Football Week 11 Sleeper: Jonas Gray

It’s becoming pretty apparent that the New England Patriots miss Stevan Ridley. Since his season-ending injury in Week 6. the Patriots’ rushing attack has been struggling, trying to find a running back who can take on Ridley’s workload. So far, that duty has been shared between backs Shane Vereen and Jonas Gray, and it hasn’t been yielding the best results both in real life and in fantasy football.

But sadly, bye weeks force fantasy owners to take risks, and with fantasy god DeMarco Murray and newly-discovered destroyer Denard Robinson both on bye weeks, many owners will have to reach deep into the waiver wire to pull out a serviceable starter. That player could be Gray.

Since being added to the Patriots’ roster back in Week 7, Gray has accumulated a total of 12 fantasy points (ESPN scoring) which isn’t all that great. The only encouraging thing is that eight of those 12 points came in one game against the Chicago Bears, where he carried the football 17 times for 86 yards.

The biggest thing going for Gray is that the Patriots want to get him involved. Against the Denver Broncos back in Week 9, he had 12 carries while Vereen only received 11 carries, though he did couple that with five catches, one for a touchdown). Having just had their bye week, I would fully expect Bill Belichick to have focused on the run game and hopefully this means more effective touches for Gray.

It’s obvious that the Patriots like Gray as their between-the-tackles running back and hopefully with a bye week to practice and get the system down, Gray will be a big part of the Patriots’ offensive game plan against the Indianapolis Colts, who give up an above-average 17.9 points a game to opposing backs.
