Fantasy Football Week 12 Start or Sit: San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore

With the emergence of rookie running back Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore’s carries have fluctuated greatly this season. Gore has been the Niners’ primary back as long as most fantasy players can remember, but he very well may be on his way out. However, he might just have one last dominant performance with the Niners this week against the Washington Redskins.

The ‘Skins have been bad on both sides of the ball this season, ranking 23rd in defensive DVOA this year. However, Washington’s run defense has been surprisingly frisky this season despite its lack of talent, ranking 11th in the league by DVOA. Other than getting burned by Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray for 150 yards and almost eight yards per carry in Week 8, Washington has held all opposing running backs to fewer than four yards per carry since Week 5.

Gore, however, looked good last week save for a fumble and has played well when the Niners have given him work. While the Redskins have played well against the run the past few weeks, they haven’t played any great running teams besides Dallas in the past five weeks. With Hyde’s amount of carries continuing to increase as the season progresses, it’s unlikely that Gore will receive more than 25 carries. If you’re looking for a solid 60-80 yards and the possibility of a touchdown from your running back, Gore still should be your guy. However, due to his timeshare with Hyde and the strength of Washington’s run defense, Gore’s ceiling in Week 12 isn’t very high.
