Fantasy Football Playoffs: Start or Sit Jay Cutler In Week 14

Jay Cutler

Tim Fuller – USA Today Sports

I’ve heard many times that Jay Cutler is in a league of his own because of his bipolar performances, but I beg to differ. He lobbies in a class of quarterbacks that include this week’s rival Tony RomoMatt Ryan and Joe Flacco. These are the guys who have the potential to be elite but squander their status due to inconsistency and/or lack of a clutch gene. However, there does come a time where they exhibit glimpses of greatness in a few games per season. I believe Cutler will have one of those better (in a good way) games this Thursday against that Dallas Cowboys defense.

Cutler’s best game was displayed all the way back in Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers. He posted four touchdowns on 23-fo-34 passing while not turning over the ball once (I know, mind blowing). Since then, the Chicago Bears have started each game slow and played terrible. By law in Chicago, it’s only right that Cutler is to blame, alongside Marc Trestman and that God-awful defense.

But let’s look at the upside. The Cowboys may be 8-4, but it’s not because of their defense. It’s only because they have finally balanced their run attack with their pass attempts. They are a top 10 team in scoring because of that. The Bears’ defense is at the bottom half of the defensive rankings which sways me to believe that they will allow at least 28 points this Thursday. Now, with the knowledge of knowing that the Bears will abandon their star running back by the end of the first quarter and that they’ll probably be playing catch-up the entire game, I think it’s safe to say that Cutler will have one of those trigger-happy, gun-slinging games.

Don’t get your hopes too high and expect him to produce a B-M-R (Brady-Manning-Rodgers) type of game. He’s not throwing five touchdowns for over 3oo yards with zero interceptions. All I’m saying is that he will have one of his best games of the season against this Cowboys defense. It’s a prime time event in Chicago with Cutler’s name written all over it. Even Eli Manning threw for over 3oo yards (three TDs, one INT) against them. If you’re still not convinced, it’s probably because you’re hoping for an elite type of performance. But if you really need to question whether you should start Cutler or not, my guess is that you probably don’t have a reliable second option. Start Cutler. If Eli could do it with less weapons, Cutler should too.
