When Brandon Jennings went down with a season-ending injury it was bad news for his fantasy owners, but luckily D.J. Augustin is a worthy replacement. There is a lot of pressure on Augustin to fill the shoes of Jennings, and he may never do that, but he can be a nice fantasy player for the rest of the season.

Jennings had a slow start to the season, but he became one of the best fantasy players over the past few weeks. Before Jennings went down for the season, he had a solid stat line of 15.5 points per game, 6.6 assists and 2.5 rebounds. Now those number have greatly increased over the last month or so, but Jennings’ average stat line on the year is a good estimate of the production that Augustin could see with high dose of minutes.

Back in 2013-14, Augustin had a pretty big role with the Chicago Bulls and averaged 27.3 minutes. After the season concluded, he finished with 13.1 points, 4.4 assists and 1.8 assists. Now in 2014-15, Augustin will get another chance to prove himself.

In Augustin’s first game as a starter on Jan. 25, he saw 37 minutes and finished with 35 points, eight assists, five 3-pointers made and added 4 rebounds. Now, before fantasy owners get too excited, they should take a look at Augustin’s 2013-14 before they set the bar too high because he won’t put up numbers like this every night.

If you’re a fantasy owner that lost Jennings for the season, Augustin is an automatic add, and the same goes for owners that are in need of a point guard. Augustin is capable of being a very good player to own in all fantasy leagues for his ability to contribute across the board. Right now, Augustin is a great short-term play and should be in the team’s long-term plans, but there are some rumors that the Pistons may be in the market for point guard.

If you’re reading this right now, go to the waiver wire and pick up Augustin. Even if the Pistons do make a move for a point guard at the trade deadline, he could be a great sell-high candidate in a week or so.
