This weekend, thousands of fans will descend upon Phoenix, AZ to watch their favorite players perform. No, I'm not talking about the Super Bowl. I'm talking about the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. It's one of the premier early season golf events, and here are the top five storylines entering Round 1.

With one victory already this year, Bubba Watson will look to add another one before the end of January, and there may not be a better place for him to accomplish that than at TPC Scottsdale. Probably the odds on favorite entering the tournament, Watson has three top-10 finishes in Phoenix. After faltering down the stretch in the tournament last year, he will look to redeem himself.

The Arizona State alum has always loved playing at TPC Scottsdale. It was just a few years ago that Phil Mickelson flirted with a 59 on his way to a third title. Can he make it No. 4 this week? He looked to round into form last weekend at the Humana Challenge, so it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility.

3. Robert Allenby

Sadly, this story has nothing to do with golf. Robert Allenby has been at the forefront of the news cycle after saying he was beaten, kidnapped and left for dead in Hawaii. There have been stories that have come out that have refuted that report, so it should be interesting to see if the truth does come out.

This field is full of thoroughbreds. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler are just a few of top players who will be teeing off on Thursday. It's a massive weekend in sports in one of the greatest theaters in golf. It can't, and won't, disappoint.

This one is a no-brainer. Tiger Woods will be making his return to the desert for the first time in 14 years. After arguably his worst season as a professional, Woods looks to get off to a fresh start this season. He draws a crowd wherever he goes, and don't be shocked to see Woods contend this weekend.
